About the school

A teaching floor for industrial engineering craft

We exist so process thinkers in the North East can practise layout, work study, and lean methods with tutors who still walk live plants.

Registered name and history

Alderway Industrial Engineering School Ltd is the official registered business name. The school was established in 2009, when a small group of plant industrial engineers opened evening classes above a light-industrial unit off West Road. Early cohorts asked for longer studio time and supervised factory visits; by 2012 the diploma year and layout studio had taken their present shape on our current campus footprint.

Today we remain a teaching school first—diploma learners, short-course participants, CPD attendees, and employer cohorts share the same mock cells and board rooms. We have stayed in Newcastle upon Tyne because the region’s manufacturers, food processors, and distribution centres give learners real lines to study within a short coach ride.

How we teach

Sessions mix short briefings with timed exercises, layout builds, and critique. Tutors rate studies in pairs so learners see how professional disagreement looks. Capstones and employer workshops use the learner’s own constraints—shift patterns, aisle widths, stillage sizes—rather than invented case studies alone.

Values we keep visible

  • Measure before you rearrange the furniture
  • Respect the people who already run the work
  • Keep class sizes small enough for board-side coaching
  • Prefer plant language over borrowed management slogans
